How Is HDPE Made?

High-density polyethylene (HDPE) is one of the most common types of plastic materials. You may even handle it daily, as common items such as plastic bags and plastic bottles include HDPE.

What Is High-Density Polyethylene?

HDPE, in the simplest sense, is a long-chain polymer or plastic made from petroleum. All thermoplastic polymers are durable yet versatile enough to turn into different textures and thicknesses.

The Process of Making HDPE

How is HDPE made? The simple answer is a series of steps completed in controlled conditions. The three main steps include:

  1. Applying high levels of heat to petroleum
  2. Creating ethylene gas through “cracking”
  3. Creating polymers when gas molecules attach

After the third step, polyethylene may not look finished because it still needs to be formed into granules by putting the polyethylene through molds. The result is a strong and versatile material that can form a wide range of plastic products.

What Are the Benefits of HDPE?

HDPE has a high strength to density ratio, making it a very durable material. It is also resistant to mold and mildew, as well as scratches and dents.

Because it is made with 100% recyclable materials, HDPE is also an environmentally friendly plastic. During disposal, HDPE can be recycled instead of dumped in a landfill because of its post-consumer content.

Another benefit of HDPE is that it is safe for users and the environment — it does not contain harmful phthalates or BPA. Those who use or are around it will not be exposed to harmful fumes, and it does not release toxic waste into the environment.
